Don’t lose money at the ATM

Please be aware when you visit the ATMs. Don’t lose your money at the ATM. Thieves no longer have to jack you for money by gun, they just simply take it from your account. I just saw a news story on how customers were going to the ATM and had problems with sliding their cards in the slider to do their bank transactions.

When another person who was standing by says “You can tap it” as an older adult we may appreciate the help but please be more cautious. The “tap” functions that we are becoming accustomed to using. The tap functions work and customers were able to withdraw money, but it also gave an in for the thieves to withdraw monies from the accounts.

Don’t be in such a rush, because it can cost you a lot. This is just a heads-up. Make sure to close out your window before you leave the ATM window. If this is too much go inside and do your business with a live teller. Here’s the video I saw about this story.

Also, make sure you have fraud alerts set up with your accounts.

Here are some general tips to help protect yourself when using ATMs:

  1. Be cautious of your surroundings: Before using an ATM, take a moment to assess the area for any suspicious individuals or activities. If you notice anything unusual, it’s best to find another ATM or go inside the bank to conduct your transaction.
  2. Protect your PIN: When entering your Personal Identification Number (PIN), shield the keypad with your hand or body to prevent anyone from observing your code.
  3. Use trusted ATMs: Stick to ATMs that are located in well-lit areas and are associated with reputable banks or financial institutions.
  4. Check for tampering: Before using the ATM, inspect the card reader and keypad for any signs of tampering. If anything appears loose, damaged, or out of place, do not use that machine and report it to the bank.
  5. Be cautious of strangers’ assistance: While it’s natural to appreciate someone offering help, be cautious when strangers intervene during your ATM transaction. Avoid accepting unsolicited assistance or advice from individuals you don’t know.
  6. Keep your transaction private: Ensure that nobody is watching your transaction or attempting to look over your shoulder as you withdraw cash or complete other banking activities.
  7. Secure your cash immediately: Once you’ve completed your transaction, put your cash away promptly and secure it in your wallet, bag, or pocket before leaving the ATM.
  8. Verify your account activity: Regularly monitor your bank statements and transaction history to identify any unauthorized or suspicious activity. Report any discrepancies to your bank immediately.
